Derrick Carter is a house DJ and producer born in Compton, California, and raised in Chicago, Illinois, where he began DJing around age 9 and made his public debut in 1982. A pillar of Chicago house through the 1990s, his sound blends the city's disco, soul, and jazz roots into an eclectic, unpredictable house style deliberately aimed at staying underground rather than chasing mainstream crossover. He co-founded Classic Recordings in 1995 with Luke Solomon and Chez Damier -- known for a catalog that counts down from its starting number, 100 -- and recorded as one half of Mood alongside Mark Farina. In 2006, Newcity magazine ranked him No. 53 on its "100 Most Famous Chicagoans" list.
